Nature and IPOL
We began this book talking about IPOL, the intelligent pulse of life; the pulse of energy that is intrinsic to everything that is alive. This pulsation of existence has the quality of expansion and contraction, dying and renewal. Each microcosmic cycle within our cells is reflected in the macrocosm in the galaxy, in one incredible, interwoven, interdependent system. For a moment, think about the rhythms and cycles that are part of our body’s functions. We have already spoken about the breathing cycle, the moment to moment breathing wave of inhalation and exhalation that exchanges oxygen and energy through our bodies, and our heartbeat that in turn facilitates the delivery of oxygen to every cell in the body. Now, take the simple example of the relationship between a tree and the respiratory tract. Our respiratory mechanism from the trachea down to the alveoli (air sacs) looks very much like an upside down tree. Trees are nature’s lungs! And as we breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide, trees breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. This is a great example of the perfect and harmonious relationship that we have with all of nature.
Now consider the circadian rhythm that regulates our sleep and wake cycle that is so intricately linked to the sun, as we’ve seen. Think about the cycles of the moon in relation to the menstrual cycle. It is no coincidence that the average menstrual cycle is 28 days, corresponding to the 28-day lunar cycle. In ancient times, when women lived close to the earth, their menstrual cycles correlated closely to the cycles of the moon. During my days at the hospital, I remember noticing that on the nights of the full moon, we saw more cases of gunshot wounds and cases of assault coming through the doors of the trauma unit. The moon was clearly having an effect on the psyches of people. The power of nature was making itself felt.
And how can we forget the most powerful example of nature’s cycles – the seasons – a cycle that we can’t help but be aware of and be affected by, even if we are living in the city. What we probably are not aware of, however, is how affected we really are. We got a sense of this with Leo’s story in chapter 3, when we touched on eating with the seasons. The seasons affect our mood and energy state more than we realise. For example, the end of winter is always the most challenging time for Isabella. Her eyes and skin feel dry, and she is more prone to anxiety. According to Ayurveda, she has a Vata (Wind) body type, which has a dry and cold quality. Living in harmony with the seasons and her body would mean adapting her internal and external environment accordingly. Practically, this may entail having a humidifier at her desk and in her bedroom, and eating foods that are high in natural oils.
Of course our own authentic energy will get depleted if we disconnect with this system we are a part of.
